Why go
Bali works best as two halves stitched together. Start in Ubud, up in the hills, where the rice terraces step down the valleys and the mornings smell of rain and incense. Then drop to the coast at Uluwatu or Canggu for the surf, the cliffs and sunsets that people applaud. In between, hire a driver for the day rather than hopping taxis, it costs far less than you think and turns a logistics problem into a tour. Nusa Penida is a boat trip and worth the early start. For the flight time, nowhere else gives you this much for the money.
