Colmar, France

It looks like a film set, and then you find out the film copied it.

Colmar, France

Why go

Colmar sits on the Alsace wine route where France and Germany have been trading the same land back and forth for centuries, and the food and the architecture both show it. The old town is timber-framed houses leaning over cobbles, painted pink, ochre and mint, and the quarter they call Petite Venise has canals with flower boxes on every rail. Eat tarte flambee and choucroute, drink Riesling and Gewurztraminer from the villages twenty minutes away, and rent a bike to ride between them through the vines. In December the whole town turns into one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, and the lights on the water are worth the cold.

Good to know

  • Fly into Basel (BSL) or Strasbourg (SXB), under an hour by road or train
  • Three nights, with a day on the wine route
  • Stay in the old town so the evenings are walkable
  • Book far ahead for December, the Christmas market fills every room

Best May to September, and December.
