Why go
Dubrovnik is a small city entirely inside a ring of walls, sitting on a rock in a very blue sea. The walk around the top of those walls takes about two hours and you should do it the moment they open, before the sun gets on the stone. Below, the main street is marble worn smooth and slightly slippery from six hundred years of feet. Take the cable car up for the view of the whole thing, and the boat to Lokrum where peacocks wander and there is nowhere to stay, which is why it is peaceful. Swim off the rocks outside the walls at the end of the day.
Good to know
- Fly into Dubrovnik (DBV), 30 minutes from the old town
- Three or four nights, plus island days
- Stay outside the walls, it is quieter and cheaper
- Check the cruise ship calendar, it changes the crowd entirely
