Why go
Hoi An was a trading port that time forgot, and the old town survived because the river silted up and the money went elsewhere. Now it is yellow walls, wooden shopfronts and a Japanese covered bridge, and in the evening the vehicles are banned and the silk lanterns come on along the water. Have something made by a tailor, it takes a day and costs what a shirt costs at home. Cycle out through the rice paddies to An Bang beach. Eat cao lau, which exists only here because of the water they make it with. It is the gentlest introduction to Vietnam there is.
Good to know
- Fly into Da Nang (DAD), then 45 minutes by car
- Four nights, more if you are having clothes made
- Rent a bicycle, the old town is closed to cars in the evening
- October and November are the wet months, avoid them
