Why go
Interlaken sits in the gap between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz with the Jungfrau massif standing behind it, and the trains do all the hard work. Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are under an hour away, and Lauterbrunnen is a valley with seventy two waterfalls falling off the walls of it. In summer you hike in the morning and swim in a lake the colour of glass in the afternoon. In winter the same trains take you to the snow. It is the rare mountain trip where you do not need a car or any particular fitness, only a timetable, and the Swiss are very good at those.
Good to know
- Fly into Zurich (ZRH), then about two hours by train
- Five nights covers the valley and one high day
- Buy the regional travel pass before you go, not there
- Check the webcams before paying for a summit, cloud ruins it
Best June to September, or December to March for snow.
