In June the sun never sets, so you hike at midnight and it is broad daylight.
Why go
The Lofoten islands are mountains that did not bother with foothills. They come out of the sea at full height, and the villages tuck into whatever flat ground is left, red rorbuer cabins on stilts over the water. In June and July the sun does not go down at all, which changes what a day means: people hike at eleven at night because the light is beautiful and there is no reason not to. Kayak out of Reine, walk up Reinebringen for the view that sells the islands, eat cod that was in the water that morning. Come in February instead and the same fjords sit under the northern lights.
Good to know
- Fly into Bodo, then a short flight or the ferry to Leknes or Svolvaer
- Five to seven nights, hire a car, the road runs the length of the islands
- Reine and Hamnoy for the classic view, Svolvaer for restaurants
- Midnight sun late May to mid July, northern lights September to March
Best June to August, or February for the lights.
