Why go
There are about 1,200 islands here and almost none of them are bigger than a village. That is why the water looks the way it does: there is no river, no runoff, nothing to cloud it. You step off a ladder into a lagoon and see your own shadow on the sand four metres down. The trip is really one decision, a resort island where the reef starts at your steps and everything is included, or a local island like Maafushi where the same water costs a fraction and you eat where the fishermen eat. Either way the day has the same shape, which is swim, eat, sleep, repeat, and that is the point.
