Positano, Italy

Everything is stairs, and every single one is worth it.

Positano, Italy

Why go

Positano is built down a cliff face, so there are no streets in the normal sense, only stairs and a road that thinks about it. You will climb more than you expect and you will not mind. The ferry along the coast is the right way to see it, past Amalfi and Praiano with the whole town rising behind you like a stack of sherbet. Eat late, swim before breakfast when the beach is empty, and take the boat to Capri on a weekday. Come in May, June or September and you get the swimming without the August crush, and a table without pleading for one.

Good to know

  • Fly into Naples (NAP), then ferry or a private transfer
  • Four nights, plus a day on Capri
  • Book a room with a terrace, you will use it every evening
  • Pack shoes you can climb in, the stairs are relentless

Best May, June and September.
