Iceland

Nowhere else changes this much between one bend and the next.

Iceland

Why go

Iceland is a short flight for how alien it looks. In one day on the south coast you pass a waterfall you can walk behind, a beach of black sand with basalt columns like organ pipes, and a lagoon where icebergs break off a glacier and drift out to sea. In summer the light barely leaves, so you can drive at ten at night in gold light with no one else on the road. In winter it flips: short days, long nights, and a real chance of the aurora if the sky clears. Book the car before the flights, that is the part that sells out.

Good to know

  • Fly into Keflavik (KEF), 45 minutes from Reykjavik
  • Six nights for the south coast, ten to ring the island
  • Rent a car, and take the gravel insurance
  • Aurora season is roughly September to March

Best June to August for light, October to March for aurora.
