Why go
Tromso sits well inside the Arctic Circle, which is the point: from late September the sky here goes dark enough and often enough that the aurora becomes something you plan around rather than hope for. Take the cable car up Storsteinen at dusk and the city is a strip of light between black water and white mountain. Go out with a chase van on a clear night and you drive until you find a gap in the cloud. In between there is a proper little city down there, an Arctic cathedral, a brewery that claims to be the world's northernmost, and dog sledding an hour out of town. Come in December and the sun does not rise at all.
