Stone Town smells of cloves, and the beaches on the north coast are the real thing.
Why go
Zanzibar was the centre of the Indian Ocean spice and slave trade for centuries and Stone Town still shows it: Arab, Persian, Indian and African all in the same alleys, carved doors, a fish market, muezzin and church bells in the same hour. Spend a day there, walk it slowly, eat at the Forodhani night market. Then go north to Nungwi or Kendwa where the water is the colour people put on postcards and the tide does not strip the beach the way it does further east. Go out on a dhow at sunset, dive or snorkel at Mnemba, and take a spice farm tour that is far more interesting than it sounds.

- Seven nights, two in Stone Town and five on the coast
- Nungwi and Kendwa keep their water at low tide, the east coast does not
- Long rains April and May are worth avoiding, June to October is dry
